Pimpama, and what actually goes wrong here

Pimpama is about as new as Australian housing gets. Whole estates have appeared here in the last few years, and a lot of the streets are still filling in.

Which produces an unusual mix for a locksmith. Almost nothing here has worn out yet, so there's very little of the failing-hardware work that keeps Ian busy in the older suburbs. What there is instead is handover work — and one job in particular that almost nobody does and everybody should.

When your house was built, a key went around that site for months. Every trade who needed access had one. At handover you were given keys and told they were yours. On a lot of builds, those are the same locks that have been open to a construction site since the frame went up.

Rekey it in your first month

Rekeying a new house is a small, cheap job and it's the most worthwhile thing a new owner in Pimpama can do.

It keeps all your hardware — nothing gets replaced — and changes the pins so every key that existed before today stops working. Whoever holds a build key holds a piece of metal.

While Ian's there it's also the natural moment to get every door onto one key, and to look at the doors builders tend to leave light on: the sliding door, the garage internal door and the side gate.

You'll be dealing with Ian, not a call centre

Ian Pearson has been a locksmith on the Gold Coast for more than 30 years. Trade qualified, signed van, and the number on this page rings his phone.

That's worth saying plainly, because a lot of what advertises as a “ Pimpama locksmith” is a dispatch centre somewhere else that sells your job on. That's where the cheap call-out that turns into a four-hundred-dollar invoice comes from — along with a drilled-out lock that never needed drilling.

Questions people in Pimpama ask

How long until Ian gets to Pimpama?

Depends where he is and what time it is. Ring and he'll tell you honestly — he won't promise you a number he can't hit.

We've just moved into a brand new house. Do we really need to change the locks?

Rekey rather than change — keep the hardware, change the pins. The build key has been through a lot of hands by handover.

Is it expensive on a whole new house?

It's one of the cheaper jobs Ian does, and cheaper again if you do every door in the one visit.

Do I have to prove the car or house is mine?

Yes, and you should want him to ask. Photo ID and something linking you to the property or the rego. Any locksmith who doesn't ask is one you shouldn't let near your locks.

Absolutely brilliant service. Had our spare car keys stolen — they chased up replacements in quick time, then travelled outside their normal service area to reach us on holidays. Cannot recommend highly enough.
