Who else has a key to your house?
Most people can't answer that question, and the honest answer is usually “more people than I'd like”.
If you've just bought or moved into a place, the list of people who might still have a working key includes the previous owners, their adult kids, whoever they lent a spare to, the last cleaner, a tradie from a renovation, and whoever the agent handed one to during the listing. None of those people are necessarily a problem. You just don't know who they are.
The other moments worth thinking about it
- A tenant moved out — and handed back the keys they admit to having
- A relationship ended — and the locks didn't change
- You lost a keyring with something on it that identifies the address
- A renovation finished and the builder's key still works
- A housemate left the share house
The fix is usually not new locks. Rekeying keeps the existing hardware and changes the internal pins so the old keys stop working. It's faster and cheaper than replacing everything, and on most standard Gold Coast houses Ian can do the whole place in one visit on one new key.
What Ian does at houses
Lockouts
Door pulled shut behind you, keys inside or lost. Opened without damage.
Rekeying
Old keys stop working, existing locks stay. Whole house to one key.
More on this →Lock replacement
Worn, seized, damaged, or just not good enough.
Deadbolts
Fitted to doors that don't have one.
Sliding door and window locks
The entry points most people forget.
Smart locks
Supplied, fitted, and set up so you actually understand it.
After a break-in
Make-safe first, permanent repair after.
Garages, sheds, gates
Including the side gate nobody ever locks.
Confirm: does Ian do safes? Opening, servicing, supply?
If you've been broken into
Ring first, before you tidy up. Ian can make the property secure the same day so you're not sleeping behind a door that doesn't lock.
Your insurer will probably want detail. Keep the invoice, and photograph the damage before anything gets repaired.
Confirm: itemised invoices suitable for insurance claims?
Whatever they got in through is now the known weak point. If it was a sliding door, that door will be tried again. Make-safe is the emergency fix; the conversation worth having afterwards is what stops it happening twice.
A locked door doesn't need to be destroyed
The most common complaint about locksmiths in Australia isn't price — it's someone turning up to a straightforward lockout, going straight to a drill, and leaving the homeowner with a bill for the call-out plus a lock that has to be replaced because it was destroyed getting in.
Ian picks and bypasses first. Drilling is a last resort on a lock that's already failed mechanically, and if it's genuinely the only option he'll explain why before he starts — not after.
If you ring anyone else, ask them this on the phone: “will you need to drill?” The answer tells you a lot.

Free security check
Ian will walk the property with you and tell you where it's weak — the doors, the windows, the sliding door, the garage, the side gate. He'll tell you if the answer is 'you're fine, don't spend anything', because that happens more often than you'd think.

Who's coming into your house
Ian Pearson. Thirty years on the Gold Coast, trade qualified, signed van, and he'll show you ID at the door.
He'll also ask for yours. A locksmith who'll change your locks without checking you live there would do the same for anyone else who rang about your address.
