What happens when you ring

  1. 1

    Ian picks up

Not a call centre, not a dispatcher, not an answering service. One bloke, one van, and the number on this page rings his phone.

  2. 2

    He asks what you've got

Make, model and year for a car. Type of lock for a house. Where you are.

  3. 3

    He gives you a price

Before he leaves. If it turns out to be a different job when he arrives, he tells you before he starts — he doesn't open the door and then hand you a number.

  4. 4

He turns up in a signed van

Marked vehicle, trade qualified, and he'll show ID. He'll also ask for yours — proof the car or the property is actually yours. Any locksmith who doesn't ask is one you shouldn't let near your locks.

Straight talk

How to tell a real locksmith from a scam call-out

Locksmith scams are the most-complained-about emergency trade call-out there is, and the pattern barely changes.

  • The ad quotes an impossibly low number

$19, $29, “from $15”. That's a trip fee. Everything else is extra, and the invoice lands between $300 and $700.

  • A call centre answers, not a locksmith

They sell your job to whoever's nearest and cheapest. The person who turns up has never heard the price you were quoted.

  • They arrive in an unmarked car

No signage, no uniform, no ID.

  • They want to drill straight away

A trained locksmith picks first. Drilling is a last resort, not an opening move — and it means you're buying a new lock on top of the call-out.

  • They want cash

    Harder to charge back.

  • The price changes on arrival

    That's the whole model.

What to ask, before you give anyone your address

  1. 1.What's the business's registered name?
  2. 2.What's your licence number?
  3. 3.What's the total price, including call-out and after-hours?
  4. 4.Will you need to drill?

City2Surf answers all four on the phone, every time.

Absolutely brilliant service. Had our spare car keys stolen — they chased up replacements in quick time, then travelled outside their normal service area to reach us on holidays. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Questions people ask at 2am

Are you actually available at 3am?
Yes. Ian takes emergency call-outs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including public holidays. You reach him directly — there is no call centre and no answering service. After-hours work is charged at an after-hours rate, and he tells you that number on the phone before he leaves.
How much is an emergency call-out?
See the table above. Ian confirms the total on the phone before he leaves, and it doesn't move unless the job turns out to be something different — in which case he tells you first.
Will you have to drill my lock?
Usually not. Most locks can be picked or bypassed without damage. Drilling is a last resort, and if it's genuinely needed Ian will explain why before he starts.
Can you get into my car without damaging it?
Yes, in almost every case. If all keys are lost he can cut and program a new one on site, and on some Toyota and Lexus models from the late 90s and early 2000s where a dealer would normally replace the whole ECU, he can reflash the original instead.
Do I have to prove the car or house is mine?
Yes — photo ID plus something linking you to the rego or the property. It's a good sign, not an inconvenience.
How long will you be?
Ring and Ian will tell you honestly, based on where he actually is and what's already booked. He won't quote you a blanket number like fifteen minutes, because nobody can hold to that across a region this size — and a business that advertises one is telling you something about how it operates.
